Cassie asked:

Do you think America is or ever has been a “melting pot?” Why or why not? America was founded only about 200 years ago - but seems to be the most diverse of countries, do you find that impressive?

Proud Momma of 4mth old Boy asked:

just think or believe that in order for progress to continue we must continue to discuss the inequality in our country. For it to be a melting pot, not much is melting nowadays. Why? Have the people of the US become content in what they see? Are we afraid to discuss the inequalities of this country with out feeling that we will be looked upon as racist. What happen to the idea of conversation and intellectual thinking. Where have the real questions gone?

I think we have been fooling ourselves in this country for a long time into believing that:
1. We are pluralistic.
2. We are a melting pot.
3. There is separation of church and state.
There has never been true separation of church and state yet we have been able to get away with it until recently because of our homogeneity. The biggest differences were, for example, are you protestant or catholic or jewish? We had some philosophical debates but our differences have been relatively minor enabling us to have the word god spattered all over documents, tender and traditions.

Now the cultural rubber is meeting the road. Globalization, and true pluralism are happening and we are NOT doing a very good job of assimilation. We seem to be legislating exceptions and forcing integration (think moments of silence mandated in schools). The natural order of things seems to be that like peoples group together yet we seem to be mandating integration. Seems like reverse segregation. Thoughts?

I will be visiting my sister in Pittsburgh next week and we are going to go to The Melting Pot for dinner. Any suggestions for what would be great to order there?
Thanks so much - I’m more worried about the chocolate calories than I am about the $100+ check. I’m sure it will be fun.
