Do you think America is or ever has been a “melting pot?” Why or why not? America was founded only about 200 years ago - but seems to be the most diverse of countries, do you find that impressive?

Multiculturalism or Melting Pot? which is the better option for Australia? should we assimilate immigrants and build a new Australian civilization blending the many cultures with our own or should allow immigrants to come here and transplant their own civilization here?

Do you think the notion of melting-pot in immigrant assimilation as bad as it sounds?

Some people say it is a cultural suicide. For me, it is like bringing the good qualities and attributes to the culture.

Julee. asked:

This is not an ILLEGAL immigration question. Lets just forget they exist for now. Would you be okay with people from other countries bringing their culture to America, or do you expect them to completely forget where they are from?
you like it though because you were born here? i mean if you happened to be born in like japan you would probably like that culture too.
What i mean by melting pot is that American culture is contributed by many, many different cultures.
Earthman.. thats not true. My mothers family is Spanish and my fathers is French. ALL of my family learned to speak English. And most Hispanics I know learn it as well. Its just, we like to represent where our family and history is all about.

You’ve made yourself sound so racist and just a horrible, evil person.

Do you think illegal immigrants mix in the melting pot or do they have their national allegiance outside US?

Bruce Tzu asked:

Do you think illegal immigrants adapt and melt into the melting pot or do they maintain an allegiance to a foreign government? I could see where some could argue that because the hispanics have everything available in Spanish in the larger cities that they don’t have to change but I don’t know if this is true or not? It would be interesting to see if studies have been done that show how illegal immigrants pick up American value and identity in terms of language, support of democracy and other American ideas. The marches last year where most illegals flew the Mexican flag make you wonder if the illegals have any desire to become US citizens and members of American culture or whether they want to have their foreign nationalism but only inside the US borders.
