You don’t need anything terribly expensive. An inexpensive double-boiler would do the trick nicely without the possibility of scorching the candy.
Just like “Brutally” says. You can use your crockpot but you have to use the low setting and watch it carefully. also any small pan placed inside a larger pan that has water in it will suffice if you do not want to spend the money on a double boiler.

I bought caramels in bulk and just unwrapped about 2 cups of them, added 2 Tbs. milk and then microwaved at 50% power for about 2.5 minutes. Let the caramel sit for a couple of minutes before dipping your apples. Tip: have your apples ready to go and in the freezer before dipping them in the caramel.
