the sad thing about Australia is they are racist and dont like the idea of a melting pot with multi cultures just look at the movie romper stomper that R crow made..
There are advocates to both the multiculturalism and the ‘melting pot’ arguments. Even now, renewed proponents of the White Australia Policy are opting for a racially selective immigration program aimed at ‘reducing racial based conflict’.
Through illegitimate discrimination in Australia (which can be quite extensive), immigrants can be indirectly forced to assimilate anyhow. The guise of multiculturalism operates on the premise that Australians are respectful, compassionate and tolerant and this disillusioned ideal is evident at the federal level. It appears, though, that ‘on the ground’ the melting pot paradigm prevails due to a large degree of ignorance and sub par education.
So what is the better option? I’m afraid I don’t think there is a resolute answer. At the federal level, it changes according to Australia’ needs, or the political climate of the time (as it always has). Due to the seemingly ubiquitous plight against all things Arabic, Australia will continue to witness a climb in surveillance of Muslim practices and the tacit propgation of ‘Australian’ norms.
Therefore, while theoretically multiculturalism is great, in a time of political volatility and heightened defence awareness - the melting pot idea will probably come to the fore, pragmatically speaking.
Well, I’m American and we have our own problems, but I vote for melting pot. There was a reason splintering the workers into separate languages was considered a curse in the Bible story on the tower of Babel. It divides, causes self segregation and friction.

multi-racial melting pot is great idea, but only bring in immigrants who have a western world view and a good command of english

i say only let immigrants that help the economy come here, they can melt, freeze, hop, skip or jump whatever the hell they like as long as they are productive to Australia, get these free loading immigrants out if all they wanna do is mooch of the government and want free housing later on down the track breeding more dole bludgers into the system.
