Earthman.. thats not true. My mothers family is Spanish and my fathers is French. ALL of my family learned to speak English. And most Hispanics I know learn it as well. Its just, we like to represent where our family and history is all about.

I think its more of a fruit salad. (Ed Koch actually said something similar - Salad bowl) We keep a little of our old identity that works together to creat a greater identity. Plus there are a few nuts in the mix too.
I used to, but it is the old ‘melting pot’ vs. ‘multiculturalism’ thing. I don’t think people should lose their heritage, but I think they should accomodate the society they move to rather than expecting it to accomodate them. I do think they should learn English (unless they are old). I do NOT think we should require that by law… However, in defense of the jobs of our working class I am starting to think that English fluency should be a requirement of working except in special circumstances. I am learning that our own people with less education, who are not rendered bilingual by our schools find themselves in a bad situation because they often can’t compete for work against the less educated but bilingual ESL students. That is because people need to be able to speak to the low wage Spanish speaking workers. I really don’t think that is right for our folks. Mexico requires fluency in Spanish to work, and now I can see why.

My family was Irish and my husband’s family was Italian.
America has been experiencing an influx of new people throughout its history. The first new settlers were English, followed by others such as Scotch-Irish, Germans, Scots, Irish, French, Dutch, Italians, Russians, Poles, Scandinavians, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, and Latin Americans. More recently in the 1990s, remarkable number of new arrivals has been recorded from Mexico, Philippines and Cuba.
None of these people were forced to forget where they were from. My ancestors were escaping poverty and famine while my husband’s family was looking for land to farm. Both of our families still have customs that were passed down and they have new customs/traditions too. Also, through marriage many of our traditions have blended over the years. Which is what I would consider the effects of the “melting pot”~a blending of cultures and traditions.
When I lived in Miami, the “melting pot” of cultures was very apparent~so yes, I think this country is a “melting pot”.
Yes, it is in my mind a melting pot. That being said and understanding that a proper immigrant would think with affection on their old culture and ways …and might to some degree still practise them …They would still realize they “had melted” into the melting pot and would become a “new taste” within that new pot or culture.
There is great beauty in graceful exchanges that share and make better as they evolve. In the ideal that is what America supposedly in theory is.
Sadly, the reality of that reality has become something quite different. Due to illegal entry and fraud, which are not equitable and good exchanges, the USA has become a boiling caldron of one culture hating another, distrust and foolishness like much of what is expressed on this site.
All this as a result of a fail government and a trusting people.
What USA is today, is not what the theory of mixed cultures would embody in it’s highest regard.
I used to but not any longer. No one expects people to forget where they came from but there are some unacceptable cultural things that don’t work in this country. People used to blend…..now they want to remain seperate and shove their cultures and beliefs down our throats. If I wanted to live in another culture…….I’d go there. Isn’t that part of the thrill of travel? Now all I have to do is go to the mall and it’s a regular UN meeting. I’ve traveled the world in a few minutes and never left town. A foreigner in my own land……and no…I don’t particularly like it. All these people I’ll never know because none of us speak the same language and they have no desire to go beyond their people. There’s a part of me that thinks it was better when people came here out of desperation and never wanted to look back to their old country. Now it seems it’s more of a pit stop to take what they want and no real desire to be here. Can’t be 2 places at the same time. I say either go back if it was so great or move on and blend in here.
You do not understand the origin of the term “melting Pot.” It meant that people who entered the USA from all over the world would interbreed and create a new, loyal, American citizen. That happened early in our history as white people from Europe interbred. But, it was more of a triple melting pot, with Jews marrying only Jews, Protestants marrying other Protestants, and Catholics marrying other Catholics.
There is much interbreeding going on today, but we are not producing loyal American citizens. The Hispanics do not want to melt into an English-speaking nation, and “diversity” and “multiculturalism” are the cult of the left. Our country united after the 9/11 attacks, but since then the trend of dis-unification has continued. With the addition of 100 million new citizens from third-world countries by the year 2050, the great nation of America will be only a shell of itself.
